The Author of Our Story

By Adam Hubbard

Verses To Read:

In 1930s England, an informal circle of famous authors and literature lovers formed and called themselves the Inklings. This group gathered in an Oxford pub each week to compare writings and share stories. It’s where J.R.R Tolkien created middle earth and C.S. Lewis created Narnia.

But lesser known Inkling Dorothy Sayers created a world of her own for Detective Lord Peter Wimsey. Wimsey is a renaissance man. He’s the detective who can always solve the case. He’s a lady’s man who is knowledgeable in food, wine, fashion and cars. Really, he’s a 19th century James Bond. But eventually, the finer things of this world leave him empty. While he’s a much accomplished character, he’s also hollow and lonely. As he developed from book to book, Sayers became more connected to him and more saddened by his life. You see, she created him. It broke her heart that his life wasn’t what it could be. So, she decided to write herself into the story. Harriet Vane, an Oxford educated mystery writer enters the series as Wimsey’s love interest. It’s this love and connection with Vane that finally brings Lord Wimsey to a life of fulfillment and purpose. Sayers knew Wimsey so well. Every detail of his life. She created him, but he knew nothing of her. Not until she wrote herself into his story and changed everything.

I think it’s the same way with us. The God of the universe, the One who created us out of nothing, saw that we were hurting. He saw that our sin separated us from Him in a way that we could never get back to Him. But God wasn’t okay with that. So, He wrote Himself into our story by sending His only Son to earth.

John 1:14 tells us, “So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son”.

God’s unfailing love came to earth in Jesus. His faithfulness was demonstrated through His sacrifice for us. His Glory was displayed in Christ’s resurrection. He did that for you. Remember, there is an Author to your story. One who knows right where you are. One who stepped in to love you and to save you. God’s presence in your life brings purpose and fulfillment to your story. He changes everything.

Questions To Consider:

1. Spend a few minutes reflecting on the idea of leaving heaven, a sinless refuge of God’s perfect love, to come to earth and die on a cross. Can you imagine making that decision?

2. Since God left heaven to enter your story, how can you step out of your comfort zone to impact the lives of others?

Prayer to Pray:

Father, we thank you for loving us so much that you stepped into our story to be with us and to provide a way to spend eternity with us. Thank you for knowing and loving us right where we are, and being faithful to care for us in every way. Help us to see the people and situations around us where we also can share your love. Amen.
